A Washington Couple, Four Suites and the Iron Shore

Dustin and Tracy came to Roatan on a cruise in 2018, did the thing most people only talk about doing, and moved down from Washington State the following year to open a four-suite hotel above the Iron Shore. Fishers Landing is what came of it: a low white house on Lot 50 in Lighthouse Estates, the residential shelf that sits just above West Bay, with the water starting where the lawn ends. There is no lobby, and no front desk in the usual sense. There are four suites, a pool deck, a ten-seat bar and two owners who are on the property most of the time.

Why It Works

We keep coming back to the arithmetic: four rooms, two hosts. That changes what a stay feels like on an island where the alternative is a two-hundred-room resort and a wristband. Breakfast is cooked to order each morning rather than laid out in trays, and a dietary restriction mentioned in advance is simply handled. The suites are genuinely large, with king beds, walk-in closets and full tiled showers, which is not the norm at this scale in the Bay Islands. The house takes adults only, so the pool deck stays quiet at four in the afternoon, when the dive boats come back in.

Why This Location

Lighthouse Estates is a gated residential neighbourhood on the west end of Roatan, and staying in it means trading beachfront for calm and a view. Every room here faces the Iron Shore, the ledge of fossilised coral that runs along this stretch of coast, and the blue beyond it is where the dive boats, the parasailers and the occasional cruise ship pass. A private community beach is about five minutes downhill on foot. West Bay beach, the one that ends up on the postcards, is a short cab ride, as is West End, where the dive shops, the bars and most of the island restaurants are.

The Suites, and What You Look At From Them

Four suites, each one built around the view rather than the corridor. King-sized memory foam beds, a walk-in closet, a safe, a bathroom with a tiled shower large enough to be worth mentioning. What sells them is the glass: the Iron Shore and the water are visible from every room, so the day starts with whatever is happening offshore. Guests report turtles and dolphins from the terrace often enough that it stops being a novelty by the second morning. Beach towels are provided, which matters more than it sounds when the beach is a five-minute walk and you will do it twice a day.

Breakfast, the Bar and the Shape of the Day

The lounge is the centre of the house. Breakfast runs from eight to ten, cooked that morning, with local pastries, fresh fruit, juice and coffee, and an earlier plate if there is a dive boat to catch. In the afternoon the pool deck takes over, and the ten-seat bar is where guests and hosts compare what they saw underwater. For dinner, the private beach below serves local food, and West End is a short ride away for a proper evening out.

Before You Book

This is an adults-only house, so it answers a particular brief: couples, dive trips, people who want the pool to themselves. It is residential rather than beachfront, and that is the trade you are making, quiet and space in exchange for a walk down to the sand. The hosts arrange dives, snorkel trips and cabs without ceremony, parking is free on site, and check-in runs from mid-afternoon with a late-morning check-out.
