Naboo Resort & Dive Center - Adults Only
What convinced us is the pairing: a PADI five star dive centre and an Italian...
French Harbour is where Roatan works for a living. The fishing fleet ties up here, the boatyards run along the water, and the town has none of the postcard tidiness of the western bays. The Yacht Club sits above it on five acres of garden, and it has been there longer than almost anything else on the island, having opened in the last century as one of Roatan's first hotels to combine a marina with a dive operation. The restoration finished in 2020 repaired the architecture instead of flattening it, which is why the place still looks like itself.
We chose it for the character the west end of the island has spent thirty years building over. This is a hotel with a past, a protected harbour at its feet and a dive centre that has been running longer than most of its competitors have existed. Twenty five rooms and suites across five acres means space between buildings and a pool that nobody has to queue for. Sailors crossing the western Caribbean put in here for the same reasons divers do, and the mix of guests in the bar is more interesting than a resort's.
The south side of Roatan faces calmer water than the north, which is what makes French Harbour a natural refuge and a full service marina possible. The dive sites of the south shore, including the wrecks and the walls off the eastern half of the island, are reached quickly from here and worked by far fewer boats than the West Bay sites. The town itself has the island's best fish markets and a handful of local restaurants. The airport is a short drive west, which makes arrival and departure days simple rather than an expedition.

Space is what the grounds buy. The rooms and suites are distributed through the gardens rather than stacked, all of them deluxe in category and most of them looking out over the harbour or the ocean beyond it. The architecture is the original, repaired, which gives the interiors proportions that newer island hotels do not have. Families and dog owners are both accommodated, which is unusual at this level on Roatan, and the pool sits where the view is best rather than where the plan was easiest.
Three operations share the site and each strengthens the others. The marina is full service and sits in protected water, which brings cruising sailors through the year and gives the bar its floating population. The dive centre runs courses and guided trips out to the south shore, a coast that sees a fraction of the traffic of the western bays. And the restaurant works all day, with a cocktail list that takes itself seriously enough to be worth staying in for. The result is a hotel where the evening has somewhere to go.
This is a harbour, not a beach: swimming happens in the pool or from a boat, and guests who want sand in front of them should look west. The location suits anyone planning to explore the island, since it sits between the airport and the quiet eastern end. Spanish and English are spoken, pets are accepted, and the check in desk keeps long hours for boats and late flights. Dive and stay packages are arranged in house and are the sensible way to book.
