Half Moon Bay is the crescent of water that West End curls around, and The Beach House sits on it rather than near it. Fourteen suites face the bay across a strip of sand, each with its own balcony, porch or patio, and there is nothing between the railing and the water. The village starts at the property line: dive shops, bakeries, the road that carries West End’s evening. What the hotel does with that position is the unusual part. It keeps the scale small, turns its back on the road, and puts the restaurant upstairs so the view is the first thing you get in the morning.

Why It Works

The temptation on Roatán is to trade location for calm and end up ten minutes from everything on a headland. The Beach House refuses the trade. It is in the middle of the village and still quiet, because fourteen suites do not generate a crowd. The second reason is consistency: every suite has the same view, so there is no bad room and no upsell to a better one, only more space. The Suites, From Twenty Three Square Metres to Fifty

The suites are numbered rather than named, and the numbers matter. The smallest run to about twenty three square metres with a porch of eleven; the largest reach fifty with a balcony of sixteen, which is a room you can live in for a week without folding anything away. Occupancy goes from two to four, so a family or a pair of dive buddies fit without a rollaway. What does not change is the orientation. Every one of them looks at Half Moon Bay, which is why the hotel can keep its room list this simple.

Mila del Mar Upstairs, the Dock Bar on Friday

Mila del Mar is on the second floor, which is the right place for it: the bay is unobstructed from the tables and the sound of the water arrives with the food. It opens at seven and runs to nine, with separate menus across the day, so guests tend to eat at least one meal here even with the village outside. The Dock Bar is the weekend counterpart, open Friday and Saturday around sunset for pizza, cocktails and live music, with film nights on a big screen and a bonfire set up for s’mores.

Before You Book

Two practical notes. The first is that being in the village comes with a sound profile: West End is lively in the evening, and while the hotel stays calm, this is not a remote retreat. The second is diving. The Sun Divers packages are the simplest route and worth pricing against booking separately, particularly for a full week. Ask for a larger suite if you are four; the gap between the smallest and largest is substantial. Bring snorkelling gear, because the reef at Half Moon Bay starts a few strokes out.
