Blue Roatan Resort
We chose this address because it gets West Bay the right way round: a small...
West Bay Beach is a long white curve with a reef running parallel to it, and Infinity Bay holds a wide stretch of the middle. The resort is built low and long in white stucco and palm thatch, stepping down through gardens to an oceanfront infinity pool that reads, from a lounger, as though it empties into the Caribbean. Around a hundred and twenty suites sit behind it. The scale is bigger than most addresses on this island, but the architecture keeps it horizontal, and the beach in front is the resort's own frontage rather than a public path.
We chose it for what it solves. Roatan is an island where families and groups of friends usually have to choose between a hotel room with no space and a rental villa with no service. Infinity Bay gives both: apartments of eight hundred to thirteen hundred square feet with separate dining areas and kitchen facilities, and behind them a spa, two pools, a restaurant, a swim up bar and an airport shuttle. Breakfast is included, which on a self catering stay is the meal nobody wants to organise. The trade is scale, and the layout absorbs it well.
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs a short swim from the sand here, which is why West Bay is the beach the whole island is measured against. Snorkellers go in from the shore, dive boats collect from the beach, and the operators running scuba, fishing, kayaking, parasailing and sailing all work this stretch. West End, with the island's restaurants and bars, is a few minutes up the coast road, and the airport is on the other side of the island with a shuttle to bridge it. What you get for being here is the reef without a boat.

The accommodation is laid out as apartments. A premier queen studio starts things at around six hundred square feet for two. Above it, one bedroom suites run to roughly eight hundred and sleep three, and two bedroom suites reach past thirteen hundred and take five, in garden or pool aspects. All of them carry a separate dining area and cooking facilities, which changes the rhythm of a stay: breakfast on your own terrace, a market shop, and dinner out when you feel like it. For a family travelling with small children, that flexibility is worth more than a turndown service.
Two outdoor pools and a separate children's pool mean the resort never has to choose between families and everyone else, and the swim up bar keeps the adults where they want to be. Tranquility, the spa, covers massage, facials and body treatments for the hours when the sun is at its worst. Eating runs from La Palapa, an open sided grill looking over the pool and the water, to an international buffet and two bars.
This is the busiest beach on Roatan, and cruise days bring day visitors to the public stretches, so mornings and late afternoons are the good hours on the sand. The resort accepts children and pets and has accessible rooms, which is rare on the island. An airport shuttle handles the transfer from the far side. Because suites are sold in several sizes, the thing to settle first is how many bedrooms you need, then the aspect, and only then the dates.
