A Resort Built Around Four Kitchens and a Reef

West Bay is the postcard end of Roatán: white sand, shallow turquoise water, and the second largest barrier reef in the world running so close to shore that you can swim out to the drop off. The Grand Roatán takes that frontage and builds inward. A beachside infinity pool holds the middle ground, the Kao Kamasa spa sits back from the noise, and four restaurants spread across the property so that a week here does not mean the same dining room seven nights running. Accommodation runs from rooms to bungalows and villa suites.

Why It Works

Scale is the argument, and here it earns its keep. A resort this size can run four distinct kitchens, staff a full spa, and keep cabanas available by the pool and on the sand, none of which a fourteen room hotel can do. At the same time the layout keeps the density down: the pool, the beach and the restaurants absorb people in different directions. The second reason is the water. West Bay puts snorkelling within wading distance and the wall within a short boat ride, so the diving does not require a day of logistics.

Why This Location

West Bay Beach is the west facing crescent at the island’s tip, which is why the sunsets have their own ritual here. The reef is the headline: the shallow garden starts a few metres out and the drop off follows shortly after, which makes this one of the few beaches where a snorkeller and a diver want the same address. West End village, with its bars and dive shops, is a short drive or a water taxi ride up the coast. The airport sits on the other side of the island and the resort arranges transfers.

Rooms, Bungalows and Villa Suites: Choosing Your Scale

The room list is the reason to book here rather than next door. A couple can take a room and use the resort as a resort. A family can take a villa suite and get separation between the adults and the children without renting a house. The bungalows sit somewhere in between, closer to the ground and to the planting. There is also a spa suite for guests who want the treatments closer than a walk. Whatever the category, the orientation of the property means the water is the constant, and the sunset arrives on the same side every evening.

Alera, Sea Cat, The Drop Off and Vos

Four kitchens is the most useful thing this resort does. Alera is the signature room, Mediterranean cooking built on local produce, and it is where a longer dinner belongs. Sea Cat takes the California angle, lighter and quicker. The Drop Off does Caribbean cooking and borrows its name from what lies offshore. Vos Café and Bar is the all day option, coffee and quick plates in the morning and craft cocktails at night. Above all of them sits the Green Flash Table, a sunset dinner set for one party, which is the booking to make early.

Before You Book

Three things worth knowing. West Bay is a beach destination rather than a village, so evenings happen on the property unless you take the water taxi to West End. Cabanas by the pool and on the sand are reservable and go quickly, which is worth handling at booking rather than on arrival. And the spa is a destination in its own right, so book treatments before you land if a specific time matters.
