A House on the Slope Above the Cangrejal

The road out of La Ceiba towards Yaruca climbs fast. Within minutes the heat and traffic of the port give way to the Cangrejal river valley, and by the ninth kilometre the noise is water rather than engines. La Villa de Soledad sits on that slope: a low house with deep porches facing the river and, beyond it, the green wall of Pico Bonito. Soledad and John built the place and live in it, which is the first thing guests notice and the last thing they forget. The gardens run downhill through tropical hardwoods and fruit trees, and the birds arrive well before the coffee does.

Why It Works

We chose it for the combination of a serious position and a very short guest list. There are only a handful of rooms, each with a private bathroom and its own covered porch, so the house never behaves like a hotel. The owners are on site and bilingual, and they organise the valley on your behalf: the rafting company, the guide for Pico Bonito, the transfer to the airport. The paintings on the walls are by Honduran artists rather than a supplier's catalogue, which is a small sign that someone here makes decisions.

Why This Location

The Cangrejal valley is the front door to Pico Bonito National Park, and this is the good stretch of it. A suspension bridge a hundred and twenty metres long crosses the river nearby and drops walkers into a network of forest trails. The river carries the best white water in the country, and the rafting operators work the rapids on the doorstep. Nombre de Dios National Park fills the view in the other direction. La Ceiba, with its airport and the ferries to Roatan and Utila, is a short drive back down the road, which makes this an easy first or last night in Honduras.

Rooms That Open Onto the Garden

The rooms are individually appointed rather than matched, with high ceilings that carry the heat away and cross ventilation that does most of the work of cooling. Hardwood French doors open straight onto a covered porch, each with its own hammock and its own angle on the valley. Bathrooms are private, with hot water showers. What distinguishes them is not a list of equipment but the way they sit in the garden: you step out of bed into tropical hardwood and fruit trees, and the birdlife is a few metres away rather than a scheduled excursion.

The River, the Bridge and the Forest

Guests here tend to be doing something. The Cangrejal is run by raft in its upper section and the trips start close by, with canyoning and zip lines on the same stretch of valley. Walkers cross the suspension bridge and climb into the forest of Pico Bonito, where the trails rise through cloud forest towards waterfalls. Birdwatchers rarely leave the garden at all. For quieter days there is horse riding and canoeing in the valley, and a cooking class in the house for those who want to take something home.

What to Know Before You Book

This is a house in the countryside rather than a property in town, so plan a car or ask the hosts to arrange transfers. Nine kilometres of road separate you from restaurants in La Ceiba, which means breakfast at the house and dinner organised in advance. Children are accepted and Spanish and English are both spoken. The house has only a few rooms and a long reputation, so it fills early in the dry season. Give it two nights at least: the valley does not reward a single night.
